Aim High graduates, teachers, families and supporters are speaking out on behalf of this important campaign. Here are a few excerpts from their stories:

From Rita Molestina, an Aim High graduate and teacher, currently working toward her master's in social work at the University of California, Berkeley:

"I remember feeling so encouraged when a teacher at Aim High said to me, 'Well let’s try to do this together then,' when I was struggling with an assignment. I was amazed to see that teachers did not spend their lunch hour isolated in the faculty lounge, but they engage with students throughout the entire day. Students never felt that they were on their own.  At Aim High, I was able to see myself succeeding."

From Natalie Thomas, parent of a 7th grader at Aim High in Oakland:

"If you can remember back when you were learning, how vital it was to have family or a neighbor or someone who really believed in you, Aim High is that program.  They step in and believe in that child. ...  Aim High changed [my daughter's] life.

You may say, 'How can Aim High change her life? It’s just a 5-week program.'  Well let me tell you:  all of a sudden, I’m going to high school fairs sponsored by Aim High, and Rachel wants to go to boarding school.  Rachel says “Mom, I need a tutor, call Aim High.”  So I call Kimberly, and sure enough, she connects me with a tutor! ... She’s still on the honor roll, and a lot of that has to do with Aim High, because she’s staying connected."

From Vince Matthews, State Administrator for Oakland Unified School District, who taught at Aim High for 5 summers (1987-1991):

"When I came to Oakland, Oakland was a district that needed to be radically reformed.  We could tinker, but we weren’t likely to change life options for many of our students - most importantly, our low-income kids of color - without radical change. … Without question, Aim High is doing what we would like to do throughout the entire system.

I was a HS principal here in Marin and I can tell you that there is an achievement gap – people pretend like it doesn’t exist, but it absolutely does.  It really would have benefited us at Mt. Tam High School if there were a middle school program like Aim High that pushed students and told them that they had options."
